Journey
드로잉웍스는 형태에 앞서 건축의 존재 방식을 묻는다. 건축은 대지 위에 놓이는 물체가 아니라, 시간과 환경 속에서 감각되는 상태다. 모든 프로젝트는 '물질적 인상' — 물질이 빛과 공기, 사용자의 움직임 속에서 남기는 그 경험 — 을 통해 나아간다.
김영배는 건축을 기능적 구조물을 만드는 기술을 넘어, 존재의 감각을 탐구하는 지성적 작업으로 정의한다. 그는 형태를 설계하기에 앞서 건축이 대지 위에서 어떻게 가장 타당하게 존재할 수 있는가에 대한 아이디어를 정립하는 데 집중한다. 이는 물리적 구축을 넘어 건축의 본질적 당위성을 찾아가는 과정이다.
그가 지향하는 자연스러움은 자연의 형상을 모방하거나 은유하는 참조적 행위가 아니다. 그것은 인위적인 것과 자연적인 것, 기술과 감성이 서로를 침범하지 않고 조율되는 미묘한 균형의 상태를 뜻한다. 재료는 건물을 짓는 수단을 넘어 인간의 감각과 기억을 매개하는 핵심 언어다. 김영배는 ‘물질적 인상’이라는 개념을 통해, 특정 재료가 빛과 시간 속에서 인간에게 어떤 직관적 경험을 남기는지 탐구한다.

Thoughts
1 물질적 인상은 김영배가 정립한 개념으로, 재료가 남기는 직접적인 감각적·정서적 인상을 가리킨다. 재료는 건축의 수단이 아니라, 건축이 신체와 기억, 빛과 시간을 만나는 언어다.
2 물질적 인상은 표면에 적용되는 효과가 아니다. 그것은 무게와 질감, 깊이와 온도, 그림자, 그리고 시간 속에서 재료가 변해가는 방식에서 비롯된다.
3 자연스러운 건축은 김영배의 건축 사상이다. 자연을 모방하거나 이미지로 축소하지 않고, 건축이 그 장소에 가장 자연스럽게 존재하는 방식을 탐구한다.

Journey
DRAWING WORKS asks, before form, how architecture can most rightfully exist. Architecture is not an object placed on a site, but a condition sensed through time and environment. Every project proceeds through “Matter Impression” — the experience material leaves through light, air, and the movement of its users.
Youngbae Kim defines architecture not merely as the technique of producing functional structures, but as an intellectual pursuit that explores the sensation of existence. Before designing form, he concentrates on establishing an idea of how architecture can most appropriately exist on its site. This is a process of seeking architecture’s essential justification beyond physical construction.
The naturalness he pursues is not a referential act that imitates or metaphorically evokes the forms of nature. It is a subtle state of equilibrium in which the artificial and the natural, technology and sensibility, are coordinated without overwhelming one another. Material is not merely a means of construction, but a primary language that mediates human sensation and memory. Through the concept of “Matter Impression,” Kim explores the intuitive experience a specific material leaves on the body through light and time.
Selected works include A House for One, Thumbooks, Light Pavilion, and Giwa. He was selected as a recipient of the TSK Teaching Fellowship in 2024, and in 2025 received the Korean Institute of Architects Special Award — Eom Deok-mun Architecture Award — and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Young Artist of the Year Award. He is the author of Naturally. Thoughts
1 Matter Impression is a concept formulated by Youngbae Kim, describing the immediate sensory and emotional impression that material leaves. Material is not a means of architecture, but the language through which architecture meets the body, memory, light, and time.
2 Matter Impression is not an effect applied to a surface. It arises from weight and texture, depth and temperature, shadow, and the way material changes over time.
3 Naturally Architecture is Youngbae Kim’s architectural thought. Rather than imitating nature or reducing it to an image, it explores how architecture can exist most naturally in its place.
