Sumok House
Here, the trees came before the house. Pines and maples planted three decades ago grew until they wrapped the building — so that the land now belongs not to the house, but to the trees. The new owner's name, too, is Sumok (樹木), meaning "tree." A ground that had raised trees for thirty years came to someone whose very name is tree.
We chose not to tear it down. We kept the frame that had made its peace with the trees over thirty years, and set upon it a low, soft, curving roof shaped like a canopy. The hard artificial lines of red brick gave way to a rough, earth-toned finish — letting technique recede into the background and the material step forward.
This is not a house that imitates nature. It is a house that the trees, planted thirty years ago, finally brought to completion.
